Ryan Gander’s eclectic output defies categorization, encompassing installations, sculptures, photos and texts that present wittily inconclusive narratives about art, culture, and his own personal experiences. Interested in language and storytelling, his work is sometimes populated by narratives and fictional characters, blurring the boundary between what is real and imaginary. At other times, Gander poses questions about the very real role of the artist, the artwork and the viewer, weaving his own experiences as an artist in a wheelchair into his work.
These two pieces are part of a series of portraits, each of an individual Gander has met during his life but painted from memory. The artwork in its finality is presented as a circular toughened glass disk 60 cm in diameter displayed on a wall. The disk has been used in the process of the portrait as a palette to mix paint.
