Pierre Huyghe is a French conceptual artist, filmmaker and philosopher. In the 1990s, Huyghe became known best for his reuse of film and mass-media images and his “post-production” technique. Another theme running through Huyghe’s work is his engagement with living things and ecosystems. Many of his performances, film, and installation pieces employ a range of living creatures including insects, plants, animals, and human beings. In an exploration of their behaviour and interaction, these works become laboratories for articulating complex social phenomena, the precarious distinction between fiction and reality and contemporary belief systems. Huyghe has also mounted his work outside of museums and traditional art venues, calling these environments too restrictive.
