Polish artist, Alicja Kwade has long been engaged with value systems, and with attempting to examine issues of inherently subjective concepts such as space and time. As a result, a dreamlike cinematic quality is a constant theme in Kwade’s sculptures, installations, film and photography. She frequently stretches and contorts everyday objects and materials into compositions in which the elements are juxtaposed or mirror one another, creating installations that ultimately provoke feelings both of awe and of constriction. In Kwade’s work, common materials of little to no value such as glass, wood and copper are transformed via elaborate, alchemical operations. Through these physical shifts, Kwade proposes new meaning and value.
